Greek Energy Forum Newsletter, 18th September 2017

The DG Energy Director General Dominique Ristori's believes that the Eastern Mediterranean (EastMed) pipeline project to build an offshore/onshore natural gas pipeline, directly connecting East Mediterranean resources to Greece via Cyprus and Crete is a possibility “and we are working for that”. However, if Cyprus is to export its own gas resources via East Med, more Cypriot gas discoveries are needed. An exploratory drill by Italian-French venture Eni-Total in waters off Cyprus had failed to find enough natural gas to exploit.

The Greek Energy Forum would like to announce the completion of the 2017 general elections for the GEF Management Committee. Following the procedures outlined in the GEF Constitution (Article 11, 12 & 13), and after a presentation of the activities and the financial status of the organisation, the General Assembly which took place on Sunday the 3rd of September 2017 saw the release of the Temporary Management Committee from all its active responsibilities and voted in the members of the new GEF Management Committee. The newly elected GEF Management Committee has now received the four-year mandate to lead the organisation forward and has assumed its legal responsibilities. The structure of the New Management Committee can be found here.

Aegean Shipping Management Enters Dry Bulk Sector With Kamsarmax Newbuilding Order Adding More “GREEN Ships”

Aegean Shipping Management makes its turn into the dry bulk sector by placing 4 orders of 82,000 dwt Kamsarmaxes with an option of 2+2 that will be built in Chinese shipyard Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry Co. Deliveries are expected between Q3 and Q4 of 2019, when it is anticipated a recovery in the dry sector mainly due to trade growth and scrapping increase. As mentioned by the company’s Chairman, Mr George Melissanidis, the company’s belief is that this is the right time to enter in that segment, as a result of the historically low asset values which are seen as an opportunity for Aegean to materialize its plans for fleet expansion and diversification with more competent and “green” vessels.
